MvC3 In the Lab: To-do List

After playing MvC3 at Winter Brawl last weekend, I came away quite satisfied with my performance; however, I knew I had a ton of stuff to improve. I started making what I thought would be a short list of things to research and work on. Here is the unabridged stream-of-consciousness mess. Note that I was inconsistent in putting question marks throughout; basically everything should be followed with a question mark. I'll try figure out the best solutions to all of these issues and chronicle them in more detail on this blog. Keep in mind that this list is only for the team I'm currently playing. Stay tuned. Ode to Chinatown Fair

Seb at Frame-Advantage.com posted this poignant tribute to the great Chinatown Fair arcade in its dying days. It has since made the rounds at SRK and iPlaywinner. Megaman Steve's disappointment is palpable as he echoes my own feelings: "I imagined bringing my kids here one day."

In the Lab with MvC3

I'm just taking a moment to let my loyal readers know that I'm aware I've been quiet lately. I've been deep in the lab with MvC3, finding out stuff for my characters that I haven't seen anywhere yet. I've got some nice, practical combos and set-ups with Hulk that do insane damage. I've got Sentinel specific combos that can nearly kill him off of a single instant-overhead hit, using only a level or two. Sadly, I've been mostly in training mode due to the online issues plaguing the game on both XBL and PSN (connection lost, match not found, etc.). I'm going to the GVN Winter Brawl tournament this weekend in Philadelphia, where I'll see how I fare against live opponents (spoiler: probably not so great). After this weekend, I plan to do similar research with basically every character. I'll take some videos of stuff that I find that I haven't seen elsewhere and post them here.

Akuma's Inifinite in MvC3

Try this at home! It's actually really easy to do, although it's also really easy to drop it by missing any one rep.

Chinatown Fair is Closing Its Doors

The saddest news for fighting game players in NY hit today. Henry Cen announced on his Facebook page that Chinatown Fair will close on the 23rd. It is unclear whether he's referring to February or March. According to Arturo Sanchez's Twitter posts, the establishment lost its lease. Chinatown Fair has a history dating back to the 50's and produced the greatest fighting game players of the East Coast. There, a young Justin Wong learned from the legendary Eddie Lee. MvC2 was honed to perfection by Justin, Sanford, Yipes, Desmond, Liston, et al. Arturo played everything from Super Turbo to SF4:AE there. Even today's up-and-coming players have begun to hone their skills in this lions den of great players. Soon, it will be no more. I found an interesting piece about Chinatown Fair's history at scoutingny.com (from which I borrowed the picture above). Also, there was a bit of foreshadowing in this year-old video by ArcadeHustla:

Shuma is Already Complete On Disc

Thanks to Global-Trance.com (via SRK), we now know that Shuma is already on retail copies of MvC3. He was apparently removed due to Frank's removal. Jill isn't complete yet, so he couldn't be added back in without a Capcom counterpart. As far as his moves, they look familiar, except for his new Mystic Ray beam super. Could this be just what Shuma needed? It certainly can't hurt him to have such a move.

It's Marvel 3, Baby!

Happy Marvel Day! After 10 years of anticipation, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is out today! I'm not even sure if my copy arrived yet, but you should try finding me (CarmineMac) on PSN or XBL.

What else happened on launch day? When MvC2 came out ten years ago, launch day meant that the game was released and would remain as-is for ten years. With MvC3's release comes the announcement of the first of many inevitable DLC packages. Capcom-Unity has some details and screenshots of the costume pack that will be released on March 1st. Although the highly demanded "Bucky" Captain America is included, am I the only one who thinks that this is too soon? If Capcom expects the game to sell well and be long-lived, trying to cash in on DLC so early may be putting the cart before the horse.

2 Days Until MvC3

Check out footage of famous longtime (ST, CVS2) player Buktooth playing MvC3. He worked on the strategy guide, so he's got some experience already.

That is Patron tequila being poured out. What does that have to do with MvC3? Well, this picture was taken at the launch party out in Cali.

I have nothing to say about it — out of spite — because everyone except me is already playing the game or partying with Wu Tang and Hieroglyphics and the release party. Me? I'm stuck at work!

6 Days to MvC3

Rumors abound that some mom-and-pop shops in Manhattan may have the game as early as tomorrow; however, there are still six days preceding the game's actual launch date. Today's update comes via SRK and features Tragic's Youtube channel. Check out the full list and subscribe, if you'd like. He may not post regularly, but anything that he does post is totally worth viewing.

One Week Until MvC3 is Not Just a Dream

I really liked the interviews Gootecks recorded at the recent LA Fight Club, and not just because Seth Killian talks about multiple people having Marvel dreams. Even more interesting is how Miles Mosley eloquently explains the unique gaming culture that things like Capcom's Fight Clubs are a result of.

Best Character Name Ever!

Melty Blood developer Ecole has announced its new game Under Night In-Birth, and it features a character that was simply made for me. Actually, the character Waldstein looks more suited to my style, and Carmine is not a girl's name, for Gill's sake! Regardless, I feel obligated to at least try to play as the character that was obviously created as a tribute to me.

8 Days to... Wait, What?!

Supposedly, Best Buy stores around the nation are installing MvC3 demo kiosks this week. According to a commenter on SRK, Manhattan's Union Square store has the game, and they're open 24 hours! I will investigate this. Anyone interested in meeting there this evening? Let me know.

According to Best Buy, the following nearby stores should also have the demo soon:

  • Levittown
  • Westbury
  • Valley Stream
  • Huntington Station
  • Rego Park

10 Days to MvC3

In ten days, Capcom begins their quest to sell 2 million units of MvC3 this year (according to SRK). Will they succeed? Will they surpass 2 million in far less than a year? Either way, we will be playing the game in ten short days.

Ono Bashes Namco's Offices

Often, Yoshinori Ono's trolling is more annoying than it is entertaining. Today, we have an exception. Ono invaded Namco-Bandai's American offices and caused some havoc.

Two Weeks to Marvel 3, Baby!

NeoEmpire had a great Q&A session with Seth Killian, but the site apparently went down due to excessive traffic. Thanks to Google Cache, I was able to access the information. Highlights include:

  • DLC characters have story mode, endings, and missions.
  • MvC3 has more accurate connection-speed detection than SSF4.

Last Blade 2 Still Gets Played

Here's some new footage of an oldie but a goodie, Last Blade 2. The Amano player is really impressive, using damaging combos and tricky feints. Check out GAMEacho on YouTube for more interesing arcade action, including some recent Guilty Gear matches.
