This is how Midway originally pitched their idea for an arcade-style basketball game to the NBA. I'm glad they didn't go with multiple camera angles or "coaches' critiques," though replays would've been nice.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937012813710689405.post-81160836331051903122011-10-20T14:11:00.000-07:002011-10-20T14:11:56.029-07:00Calendar Updated!

I've updated the calendar (to the right) with a ton of dates for upcoming games, both through the rest of the year and into 2012. Also, I added all the dates you need to talk to Calendar Man in Batman: Arkham City to get the associated achievement. If you visit him on each of those days, he'll share a story with you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937012813710689405.post-54871018896699271342011-09-27T14:04:00.000-07:002011-09-27T14:04:37.757-07:00The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition
Now, I've never bought an outfit in a fighting game, and they've really never appealed to me; however, I've got a real soft spot for Mech Gouki, the boss of my favorite Versus game of all time. In fact, I may have to play Gouki in UMvC3 just to use this outfit. You could say that Ryan Payton is one of America's greatest game designers, and you might be right. There is, however, no doubt that he's one of the bravest.

Having learned Japanese by playing Phantom Dust on the original Xbox, Ryan Payton lived in Japan for some time before he got a gig with Konami's Kojima Productions. There, he worked to refine some of the design elements (including the controls) of MGS4, with Western sensibilities in mind. To be frank, he made it his mission to ensure that the archaic, stilted design that was a sort of Japanese tradition was eschewed in the new game. To argue with the gaming geniuses at Kojima Productions about how to design games, as a complete outsider, could not have been an easy task. Like I said: Payton is brave.

Then, he left KojiPro to come back to America. He willingly left a job with one of the most talented developers in the world! Brave! After returning to America, he landed a job at 343 Studios, where Halo 4 was being made. Only yesterday, he announced that he'd be leaving the Halo studio to form his own studio, Camouflaj. Starting a company is probably the epitome of bravery. What made him do it? He simply wasn't happy with the direction that Halo 4 was taking. Rather than rest on his laurels and collect his paycheck, the solution was to leave and pursue his passion; he's the American Keiji Inafune! He cannot be happy unless he is pushing the medium of video games forward.

I, for one, admire Ryan Payton for his bravery and passion for the medium we hold so dear, and I can't wait to get my hands on Camouflaj's games! Good luck, Ryan!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8937012813710689405.post-14186153522850411282011-09-02T19:38:00.000-07:002011-09-02T19:38:03.196-07:00Fuudo Says You Have No Excuse to Miss EVO

12 years ago, the best fighting game ever was released in arcades. Brian and I drove down to Dunellen, NJ in 95-degree heat, with no air-conditioning, to pay 75 cents per credit... and it was totally worth it! Nassau Mall arcade had closed by that time; thanks to Marty and I playing mostly on console at that time (shoutouts to SF EX and Alpha 1 on PS1), we put them out of business. The Dreamcast port came years later and was pretty crappy. The PS2 port wasn't perfect, but it was definitely playable. Newer games came around, and 3rd Strike seemed forgotten... until today!

Even if you've never played 3S, you really should give it a try! It's only $15 and has the best netcode of any fighting game ever. Don't be discouraged when people tell you that only a few characters are actually usable. Unlike in SF4, Dudley and "Grandpa" Ken are in the top 5, and are super-aggressive. Also, there's a ton of fun to be had even with the low tiers. Check out TheShend on Twitter for a ton of Japanese match footage, and you'll see some crazy stuff done with the less-popular characters. Find a character you have fun with, practice your parries, and don't forget to just block sometimes.

There are definitely MvC3 announcements coming very soon, which may include DLC characters or an entirely upgraded version of the game. Lupinko is known for leaking the original MvC3 roster way before any official reveals. Now, he's back at it, but this time with only subtle hints. Check his Twitter for the latest hints, but here's what he's said so far (exact quotes in bold) and my completely pulled-out-of-thin-air guesses as to what they mean. (I'll add to them over time.)
OK, this question was actually dropped because Seth basically didn't answer it, but here you have it:

iPW: Let’s speak just a little bit about the story of the game. In the Vs. games, usually the endings are kind of humorous, with a lot of cameo appearances. Are we going to see something like that in Street Fighter X Tekken, or will it have a more serious approach to story?

SK: There actually is a story, and I don't think it's done, but it's pretty far along. I have not read a lick of it. I get random V.O. clips. I get that stuff sometimes. I've seen some voice clips that are part of it, but I have no connection to the story. I don't get involved in that at all. I would imagine they would have some sort of Street Fighter crossover element in there. I'm guessing you're going to see cameos and things like that, but I have honestly not looked at the story one iota. I have it sitting somewhere on my computer, and I haven't even haven't even looked, which is how much of an anti-story guy I am. I'm not hating on the story guys. It's just that I'm all about the game mechanics and the systems. That's where I'm at: I haven't even read the story.

The other thing that I found really interesting about the process was how difficult it was to actually transcribe conversational language. I'm sure everyone realizes that the two are very different, but I assure you that you have no idea how much so until you try to write down what someone is saying. I started by listening to the answers and writing down every last word Seth said. It turns out that there are a lot of words used in conversation that mean nothing. They're just fillers like "Um" or "Uh." Such words are: And, But, You know, Then, So, and some more I'm forgetting. They mean nothing. And, when written, they make sentences seem to go on forever. To translate what was actually said into something that even makes sense when written is really tricky, not to mention that 22 minutes of conversation equate to over 4,000 words. Below is an example (and sneak peek at Part 2) of what I'm talking about.

Literal transcription: So, you’re able to – it’s sort of very much of a – it’ll still work, but it’s a much easier process to just drop it into games like that. But, in terms of the overall feature set, you’ve got to help me in my mission, because, you know, I push for these things once in a while with some success in some areas, but basically, if we can communicate to the Japanese office that I’m not crazy and it’s not just me and that the fans really react to this stuff and that it’s really important to them, we can get more of these features in there.

Becomes: You’re sort of able to just drop it into games that are based on 2D animations and things like that. It’ll still work [in other games], but it’s a much easier process to just drop it into games like that. In terms of the overall feature set, you’ve got to help me in my mission. I push for these things once in a while, with some success in some areas. Sometime after part 2 goes live, I'll post the full audio file here, including the cut part where Seth totally blows up a trash question I ask.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
